Tell Congress: Pass the Military Readiness Enhancement Act
I urge you to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act, which would repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" and ensure that all qualified Americans can serve in the military regardless of sexual orientation. Support this measure by signing up below - help us tell Congress to pass this important legislation. The Military Readiness Enhancement Act was introduced on March 3, 2009, by Rep. Ellen Tauscher (D-CA). She is now joined by 141 bipartisan cosponsors and counting. Show your support by signing up below and becoming a cosponsor too. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is the only federal law that mandates firing a person because of their sexual orientation. The ban forces patriotic Americans to hide their sexual orientation in order to serve. No one willing to provide critical skills in a time of war should have to hide who they are as a condition of their military service. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" is a discriminatory law that weakens our military. The time for repeal is now. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" applies to all Americans serving in the U.S. Armed Forces, including active duty, Reserve, and National Guard personnel. At least 65,000 gay and lesbian Americans in uniform live with the constant threat of a career-ending discharge under the ban. This is no way to treat patriotic Americans who volunteer to serve our nation in its time of need. Nearly 13,000 Americans have been discharged under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" in the last 15 years - an average of two people per day. Our government has spent more than $363 million in taxpayer dollars firing desperately needed military linguists, pilots, doctors, intelligence analysts, nurses, and others with critical skills we need in this time of war. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" undermines military readiness, recruiting and retention. I urge you to support the Military Readiness Enhancement Act by becoming a cosponsor.
